Fred Fisher Appreciates Richmond First Club’s
“Wonderful speakers”
Richmond First Club’s new president, Fred Fisher, doesn’t live in Richmond. He lives in Charles City County. But that is part of what Fred thinks is important about the Club. His interest is in the “Richmond region."
Fred became president of Richmond First Club the first of July. The excellent speakers attracted Fred to the Club. He continues to believe that members are afforded a unique opportunity to stay abreast of happenings in the Richmond region through the monthly luncheon meetings.
Fred’s interest in the Richmond region is long-standing. Although living in Charles City, he was on the board of the Richmond Urban Institute. He is a founding member, and still on the board, of the James River Association, He is also a founding member of the Varina Beautification Committee and is on the Steering Committee of the Partnership for Smarter Growth.
Fred was born in New York City, but moved to Charles City when he was two. He grew up at Westover Plantation where he and his wife, Ingeborg (Muschi), continue to live. His grandfather bought Westover in 1921.
For those who have heard that Fred’s background heralds from the “Bodies by Fisher” Fishers, that is not true. But another family name will be familiar. That is Crane as in Crane plumbing products. Fred’s great great grandfather founded Crane Company in Chicago.
Fred retired from his 32-year career in the Virginia Attorney General’s office in 2006 but he continues to work there as an hourly worker for the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. His clients at the A. G.’s office have been from time to time the State Water Control Board, the Council on the Environment, the Marine Resources Commission, the Chesapeake Bay Local Assistance Board, the Department of Historic Resources, the Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Virginia Outdoors Foundation.
A graduate of Princeton University and UVA Law School, Fred served in the Army in Germany, but that is not where he met Muschi. A friend arranged a blind date with her in Washington where she was working as an au pair for her uncle, who was in the German Foreign Service. Fred was working in New York at the time with a small Wall Street firm.
Richmond beckoned so the Fishers moved back in 1974. They lived in the Fan Distirct until they moved to Westover in 1979.
Fred became a member of Richmond First Club several years ago and has continued “because of the wonderful speakers we have.” An important part of living in a democracy, he says, is “the discussion of civic issues.”
The Fishers have two children. Andrea is married to Rob Erda. They live with their three children live in the Fan District. Peter, single, lives in New York.
Muschi is civic minded as well. She has served on the Charles City County Welfare Board, the Charles City Fair Committee (she is a Master Gardner), and on the Boards of the James River Association, the Virginia Opera and the Richmond Ballet.
